Hello Eugene,
I used SR with ECS in my previous house with pretty good success. I have not yet implemented
it in my new home but am slowly adding improved features to my new system. I had great
success with the Crown open air mic which you can purchase from www.homecontrols.com.
Just search "microphone". I buy a lot of equipment from this catalogue. Do other
ECS'ers use it or have better sources? If you fill out the paperwork for a business
in your state you can join the "dealer first" program and get a substantial discount.
I used a different SR engine before it was integrated with ECS. I kept the open air
mic on a coffee table in the middle of my family room and actually had another mic wired
in parallel in the bedroom. I could speak in a normal voice or slightly raise my voice
from across the room and have 90-95% recognition. If there are other people talking
or other noise then it will not work well. All commands have to be confirmed because
of the less than 100% recognition. I also had a command for sleep/wakeup mode for times
there were a lot of people talking. Let me know if you have more questions.
Daniel Dubay
PS. Bill Walters - I believe you helped me with a problem a couple months ago and I
didn't get a chance to say: Thank You!

Hi everyone:
I'm not quite sure how to subscribe to this list; in any case, I just have
one question for now. Has anyone tried speech recognition in their automated
home, and what setups did they find appropriate? I assume that just a simple
desktop microphone would not be enough for reliable open-air SR?
IAutomate.com recommend getting a Shure 4-channel automatic mixer, and
in-wall omnidirectional microphones -- a setup that runs about $1K. Does
anyone have any suggestions about that? Does anyone know any guides on
installing an open-air SR system?
Thanks,
Eugene
