Mode is a dos command, like type or dir or format.

It should be in the DOS directory, or if Win95 in the windows directory.
From a dos prompt enter "mode /?"

You only have to run it once after bootup and it stays in effect until
changed.
The ususal order would be:

mode /mumble /mumble
copy mumble.txt > com1:

or echo mumble > com1:
