Subject: From: Date: | Ideal field selection behaviour (was: Windows type event typing) Michael David Mon, 2 Nov 1998 23:01:18 -0500 |
Hi Mark!
Ok, here's my opinion on a Win95 interface that I have seen that I like:
Tab, shift-tab and arrow keys move between fields;
"Tabbing" or "Arrowing" into a field automatically highlights the selection,
so that subsequent typing erases current selection;
As the user starts typing, selections are "auto filled", and highlighted.
Each subsequent character typed brings the user closer to the intended
target selection;
<cntrl-up> or <cntrl-dwn> arrow key drops down list and selects next higher
or lower selection;
Subsequent <cntrl-up> or <cntrl-dwn> arrow keys move up or down the list;
<cntrl-page-up> or <cntrl-page-down> keys while list is dropped-down move up
or down the list by one page;
<cntrl-home> take user to top of list;
<cntrl-end> takes user to bottom of list;
After locating the selection, <return> or <enter> (or <cntrl-return> or
<cntrl-enter>) confirms selection.
It seems like a lot of <cntrl> key combinations, but once you are holding
the <cntrl> key down to get into the drop-down list, it's quite natural to
keep down while finding the target selection.
What do you think?
Cheers!
Michael David

Does anyone know of a "standard way" by which W95 would do
what Dan is requesting ? I am a typer as well and want this
feature. Otherwise, how do WE want it to work (in DETAIL) ?
BTW, The up/down arrow and page keys change ALL fields
in a given group-item window - what is the deal with this ???
