I am TRYING to avoid using beta and/or v 4 stuff, but the last version of
3.4 that has the software I paid for will NOT run in 'real' mode (only
'lite' mode) and I cannot get any help.

Are you referring to v4 or v3.4?
Are you implying that you are doing ECST v4 strictly for me?
If you are doing ECST  v4 strictly for me, please stop and lets fix v3.4.
I understand the desire to move forward, but you cannot abandon your
existing users that need stable software.  I was never given any hint that
the HAI software would never be released in v3.4.  If that was the plan,
then why did I pay for HAI support in v3.4 6 weeks ago?
Why won't the 10/2/98 ECST v3.4 run in real mode?
I reported this to you a month ago!
