Why do you think removing e-mail addresses would be so bad? E-mail addresses from two years ago aren't necessarily valid any more to begin with. I, for one, changed e-mail addresses four times in the last two years. If somebody really wants to contact the original sender, he could always send a broadcast to today's list. Either the person is still around and replies that way, or (s)he isn't, and then there is a good chance he either lost interest or changed e-mail address.
