As to the random access of the disk drive there are a few possibilities
as stated in a book called "Windows Anoyances". First, windows changing
its swap file size. The book states that a fixed swap file size will
speed things and keep the swap file from becoming fragmented. In My
Computer right button Properties, choose performance tab and select Let
Me Specify my won Virtual Memory Settings. Set the Min and Max size to
be the same so windows won't resize at will and set the size to two and
a half times the ram installed on the machine (as per the book). Then
run a utility to defragment the drive to create one large swap file in
one place.
Second, I can not remember what it is called nor can I find it in
the book, but Windows regularly searches the drives for file locations
which it then creates a map of to speed up the find utility. This is
not necessary and in a computer that is on allways, runs the disks extra
and creates more wear. I think windows calls it some kind of index.
Third, if you have any utilities like Norton or Virus checkers, they
will randomly check the drives for problems, viruses, available space,
and windows prolems. Check what other programs you have running.
