got it and trying not sure yet.

once i set a button to non/monitor/append how is the button
initialized? if i close the client then the server then ecsw and then
start it all up again will the client send a monitor command without
me pressing anything ?

also, seems like the button status is not refresed when i go to a
diffent group and then come back. just tried a quick test and what you
lose is the special color of the button based on the monitored
value...they display in the default button colors. actually you are
changing the color of the button at the correct position just on the
displayed group/page not the hidden button/group/page.

sorry for the long winded chat mode but i am writting as i discover.
the extra comma works for the monitor mode. 

really would like to know what should happen on a client startup
equence, how and when do you initialize the monitor only buttons?
