It works fine, though you are right - it's a kludge. I've had to use it
because HomeVoice wants to talk to my HomeVision unit directly on COM2 and
I have software already talking on COM2 to my HomeVision. So I told
HomeVoice my HomeVision unit was on COM3, then I ran COM3 port back into
my COM4 port which could then be read and sent info from the program
(something like ECS) on the HomeVision COM2 port.
It helps to have multi-port serial board, but they are pretty cheap and
easy to use (check out www.byterunner.com).
It works, though you'll probably not be proud of the results... :-)
