Don, I think you've hit it right on the head. I agree with you 110%

As to the file/edit/view/tools type menus, things to add are the things
that are currently only available through "ctrl" or "alt" type keys
shown in the ecs.htm .
<snip>
Shouldn't the menus help us in remembering all we can do? I for one
don't remember all these commands all the time. If you do implement
drop down menus, please make sure to have the hot key shown to the right
of the command in the drop down menu. Other programs do this. It is
nice to remind us what the program will do and if we do it often, then
we will know the hot key to make it happen. I for one wanted a way to
enable/disable event processing from the event editor. I had actually
typed that in this message only to find it was a <Ctrl-a> hot key when I
went to get my examples from the manual.
You could also add the new windows things such as cut, copy, paste,
delete, copy selected, delete selected, make selected the same size,
move selected, and such. They would belong under the "EDIT" menu.
How about the things that were available from the ? key (at least in
the old ECST), such as what states are available and the search type
screen that took 5 "?" keys to find where that item/event was referenced
in other events/items/groups and what other types are of the same type
exist. These types of commands should be under "VIEW" as "REFERENCED
GROUPS", "REFERENCED EVENTS", "REFERENCED ITEMS", "SIMILAR ITEMS",
"AVAILABLE STATES" and such.
Commands on a menu bar would make the program much easier for novices
and even those of us who have used for years but don't remember all the
hot keys and even what is possible with hot keys. Any command that
someone can do should be available in the file/edit/view/tools type menu
bar.
