I have another stuttering problem... this one has nothing to do with the
modem.

When I set my Speak-Messages item to "Speak", it pauses for a long time in
the middle of words.  Here's some console output while it happens (note that
the ADPCM stuff is perfect, this is ECS reading my log file, not voice
recordings):
