If it is working thet is all that matters. But for the record
By convention Quad wire is normally used on Residential installations
the wires are:
Green - Tip or return for Central office Battery
Red - Ring 48 volt Central office Battery
Yellow- Ground used back when we had party lines to give ring from Red to
ground in which case the opposite part got Ring from green to ground.
also used in ground start trunking.
Black - Transformer voltage for running dial lights etc.

Bill , Tim Dan & others,
Figured out what the problem was. While there were 3 pairs of wires coming
into the house and 3 cables running from the entrance to the 3 rooms. Only 2
sets of wires were hooked up outside! Once I hooked up the third pair(to the
same place as the other 2) then everything worked fine.
Thanks for all the advice and info. I will soon be setting up a 'wiring
closet' and will run all lines through there. However, for now I'm happy.
Tom
