All problems fixed!  Thanks.  Of course now there is a new one, or rather
one that didn't show up before.  I have two ways to play a phone message.  I
can double click on it in the message window or I can have the message
played by setting the speak-messages item to Play-VC in an event.  For
example:

If	Play messages		Is Now 	ON
Then 	Speak-messages	Set 		Play-VC

The "play messages" item is an appliance type item.  If I play a message via
an event the state of the message remains "new."  If I play the message by
double clicking on it in the message log it is then set to "not new."
