OK, well, now I'm in a "quandry"....  

If I use the following:

Do	Speak-Messages	Set	Speak/New

in an event, you're saying the state of "speak-messages" type never
changes from idle while messages are being spoken?

In that case, the state of speak-messages type can't be tested, only
set, is that true?

If all the above is true, perhaps it might be time to revisit use of the
"relay" item in speach output item?  Right now, the relay item only gets
activated in response to a voice command, how about if you changed it to
having it activated anytime the speach package spoke?
