Hi Bill,
I assume that ONE of the following is true
(if not, please email me your cfg):

1) The Item in question is a State-Holder (versus a real
   SPEAK-MESSAGES Item).

2) An Event is using a SPEAK/W or PLAY/W (wait), which
   would cause all normal processing to halt until it
   was spoken/played.
