Subject: From: Date: | Re: [ECS] VNC Scott Reston Tue, 06 Jul 1999 22:45:29 -0500 |
i've connected to my ECS machine over a dialup. the machine i was on was connected to
the 'net via a T1, but my ECS machine was connected via a 14.4
modem. connecting over the T1 behaves equivalently to connecting over a dialup as the
14.4 modem is what limits the bandwidth (even if i had 14.4's at
both ends, my speed would be about the same). working over a dialup was considerably
slower than working over a local LAN. most of the time was tied up
in the initial screen refresh... once i had gotten past that initial refresh, it was
usable, but i wouldn't want to do much more than check a few states, turn on a
few lights, etc.
i've "installed" the VNC client on all of my machines on my home network and control
of my ECS machine works rather well. (btw, i put installed in quotes,
because the viewer is only a single file.
