I inquired about the boards a local vendor has, and he said he has a 333 pentium for
199 but it's atx and I need the case too. So since this is an investment for a while
to come, I am negotiating with me wife to do the upgrade. (The old 486 is one she bought
from a company she worked for and has sentimental value....) anyway, I suspect the
processor is too slow for the speech engines now.

Scott,

I started out using ECS 4.0.x with a 486/100. Using (for telephone) speech
output helped the stuttering a little, but not too much.

I upgraded to Cyrix MII/300 (with new motherboard & 4.3mb HD) and have been
more than pleased ever since. Total cost was about $230 or so (CPU = $55,
SOYO M/B=$69, Maxtor HD= $109)
