Accessing your PC via the Internet
"VNC" (Virtual Network Computing is "freeware" which may be used to access remote PCs via the Internet. We have not used/tested this software extensively, but it appears to work satisfactorily. However, it is quite sluggish with 28.8 baud connections. Other commercial software may perform better.

WINVNC Installation on "Server" (ECS) PC

  1. From your Win DeskTop, click MY COMPUTER.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive icon.
  3. Click FILE, NEW, FOLDER, and enter "VNC" (so as to create the new directory C:\VNC)
  4. Click VNC downloads.
  5. Fill out the form, check WIN32 (INTEL), and click PROCEED TO DOWNLOAD.
  6. Click the 1st occurrence of ZIP ARCHIVE (ZIP).
  7. Download the file to/as C:\VNC\VNC.ZIP.
  8. Using WINZIP (or PKZIP), unzip C:\VNC\VNC.ZIP.
  9. From your Win DeskTop, click START, RUN, and enter "C:\VNC\SETUP".
  10. From your Win DeskTop, click START, PROGRAMS, VNC, and INSTALL DEFAULT REGISTER SETTINGS.
  11. From your Win DeskTop, click START, PROGRAMS, VNC, and WinVNC. You should then see a new icon appear in your Win DeskTop Tray (bottom/right of PC screen).
  12. Right-click on the VNC Tray icon and select PROPERTIES.
  13. Enter the desired password (which will later be required to access your PC remotely). NOTE: Passwords are case-sensitive.

VNCViewer Installation on "Client" (remote) PC

  1. Repeat steps 1-10 above.

To establish connection manually
On the "server" (ECS) PC:
  1. Connect to your ISP.
  2. Run WINVNC.
  3. Run \WINDOWS\WINIPCFG to get the IP address assigned to this ISP connection (a new address is assigned for every connection).
On the "client" (remote) PC:
  1. Run VNCViewer and enter the IP Address obtained above.
  2. When the password prompt appears, enter the password you defined above (remember that it is case-sensitive).
  3. After a delay (while display data is being collected), the Server's PC screen will be displayed (this may take much as 80 seconds with 28.8 baud connections). To enter full-screen mode (so as to display the Win TaskBar & Tray), right-click on the VNCViewer TaskBar Icon, and click FULL SCREEN MODE. To exit full-screen mode, enter <Ctrl><Esc><Esc>, right-click on the VNCViewer TaskBar Icon, and click FULL SCREEN MODE.
When you are done, close VNCViewer (on client) and WINVNC (on server).

To establish connection with ECS/ECS.CFG
Note: Prior to attempting a remote connection, you must first modify the POSTIE command in WINVNC0.BAT (on the ECS PC), such that it will email to an account which is accessible from your remote PC.

From the remote location/PC:

  1. Call ECS and enter the macro "50". ECS will then hangup and execute WINVNC0.BAT, which will:
    1. Dial/connect to your ISP.
    2. Run WINVNC.
    3. Determine the IP Address assigned to this ISP connection.
    4. Create a batch file (VNC.BAT) containing a VNCViewer command which will connect to this IP Address.
    5. Email VNC.BAT to the remote PC.
  2. Connect to your ISP and check your email until you receive the VNC.BAT message from ECS.
  3. Click "VNC.BAT" and "OPEN". This will execute VNC.BAT, which will run VNCViewer and connect to the appropriate IP Address.
  4. When the password prompt appears, enter the password you defined above (remember that it is case-sensitive).
  6. When you are done, set the ECS "WINVNC Disconnect" Item to True and close the VNCViewer. Note: Setting this Item to True will cause ECS to pause 15 seconds (giving you time to terminate VNCViewer), execute WINVNC1.BAT (to terminate WINVNC and disconnect), and reset Phone-Interface-C.
