The item's text value (should be the filename, right?) is changed.  I will
do some debugging to see what I can find.  Again, the first time you set the
item to "log states" all works fine (A text file (with the correct name) is
created with the items and states), BUT after looking back at the text item
(that should contain the filename), the items state has changed (from being
the filename to something else).  I also was using the exact code I have
used in the past.

Kevin,
I assume that you mean that the text of the Item is no
longer in the file (versus the "file path" ???).
I looked at the applicable code back to 4.1.001 and
nothing has changed: The text of Text Items have never
been written to the file (only the States).
I also ran a test to verify.
