If you're booting from a diskette, you must load the "real mode" CD-ROM
drivrs in order to have access to your CD-ROM... There will be an entry in
CONFIG.SYS that looks like:

DEVICE=TRICD.SYS /D:MSCD000

And in your AUTOEXEC.BAT, you'll something like:

MSCDEX /D:MSCD000

...of course, your mileage may vary depending upon the particular driving
conditions you encounter.......

I've never figured out how an E-IDE CD-ROM can be recognized and used in
Windows 9x without any trouble, but in DOS, you have to load some sort of
special "driver"..... If DOS can recognize and use your HD, why can't it do
the same for a CD rom??? Ah, such are the mysteries of life!
