Most "RS-232" thermostats are really RS-485 which is multi-drop RS-232,  Ie;
multiple addressed RS232 interfaces.

The HAI Omnistats can supposedly all be put on one RS232 line though that
seems very non standard to me. I guess it works because each is coded as a
unique device and only one will respond at a time. I have 6 total but have
not hooked them up to the OmniPro yet. They can also go to a PC but may need
an RS232 extender if over a 500' run I think.
