Mark & Michael,

The tts.dt tip was the one. The voice was set to female (telephone).
Sounds much better, but still not up to the Mac voices Bruce or
Victoria.
On the screen color thing I deleted and re-constructed the Startup event
 that set them and  they stay set correctly.

Is there any way to speed up the voice as can be set in the Voice
Commands
Options?
