I think that might speed things up some.   I would try it.  Would it be a big coding
problem to set an environment variable to switch between the two methods if some need
it both ways?

Does anyone mind if I have the I/O-BYTE and SERIAL-BYTE
Items "read-on-reference", meaning that they will be read
every time an Event-Line references them (as is the case
with FILE Items) ?
This will ease Garren's difficulties in reading analogs,
and will propbably be easier for anyone interfacing to
devices which are not "directly" supported.
