Go to the nearest computer store and spend the $30 or so for a CD. Yes, you
can download it (go to http://www.redhat.com/mirrors.html), but only if you
have a very fast Internet connection and a lot of patience. It's about a
500 MB download. I did it, and it took my cable modem all night.

Which version of Linux you get seems to be a matter of taste. The favorite
for ease of use and for the desktop seems to be Corel's distribution. My
personal favorite (and the only one I have any real experience with) is
RedHat. Then there is SuSe, Caldera, TurboLinux, and at least 10 or so
more. They all are essentially the same, except they include different user
interfaces and different installers, and some also come with applications
(such as WordPerfect, StarOffice or KOffice).
