I agree with Joe. I did the same thing in our place, and that's how I found
out about the bad power strip and the breadmaker. I borrowed an X-10 signal
strength meter for the task. Took a couple of hours and was a pain in the
butt, however it was completely worthwhile.
Get the phase coupler, though, anyway! Even a $35 will improve some things
for you.

Hello
I had a problem a few years back that was similar. I seemed any time I
had My SONY TV on NO X-10 would transmit over the line even if the
transmitter and reciever were plugged in the SAME outlet. Seems the high
frequency switching supply in that TV was a bit crappy and putting noise
on the line. Had to put a filter on that television. I also had the
same problem with a spare computer I used for the kids. I would try
shutting down (unplugging) anything ELECTRONIC (VCR, Television,
Computer) and see if it works. If it does, power up one thing at a time
until it doesn't.
