Give ECS the finger...
William Biggs

I new device caught my eye, located on page 333 of the Sept 1, 1998 PC
magazine.

This gizmo reads your fingerprint, and bills itself as a "Fingerprint
recognition system".

Although it is designed for access to your computer itself, I could see
programming ECS to use it. I could envision putting one at my front and back
door, and when I put my finger on it, it unlocks the door.

I could put my wife, 4 kids, babysitter, on it.

I'll need to think about whether the in-laws will be enabled....

Best of all, this thing is starts at $99.

Downside: It requires a USB port.
Upside: if you have a USB port, it doesn't take any serial ports or IRQs!

Anybody seen one of these ? Could a USB port go 100 feet to my front door ?

There is an available kit to enable custom programming (?like ECS?) .

"The U.are.U Software Development Kit lets programmers add fingerprint
security to any application. This high level toolkit is fast and easy to
use, requiring only five calls for full fingerprint functionality. The
U.are.U SDK is available in both DLL and DCOM versions, allowing standalone
or distributed fingerprint-enabled applications."

"Corporate, government, and educational buyers can purchase evaluation units
of the U.are.U system. For more information, contact sales at Digital
Persona. Within the USA, call Toll Free, 1-877-DP-U-ARE-U (1-877-378-2738)
or (650) 261-6070.
Or by e-mail, send inquiries to sales@digitalpersona.com "
