Subject: From: Date: | RE: [ECS] Networking problem Scott Reston Mon, 21 Feb 2000 10:46:30 -0500 |
in my case, i've got internet connection sharing set up on my fileserver (not my ECS
machine). this machine rarely needs to dial out itself, but when it does, it's
scripted. i've got "dialup whenever a connection is needed" selected. if you wanted
to turn off the auto-dial when connection is needed, you could have ecs
send commands to that other machine to tell it when a dialup is needed. i've been using
this a lot... for example, when ECS sends me an email of a phone
message, it'll kick off the 'connect to internet' batch file and wait for it to complete.
the batch file tells my dialup server to make the connection. when it's
done, i kick of a script to email me the phone message. the emailing script sends kicks
off a batch file to tell the dialup machine to drop the connection when
emailing is complete.
the secret ingredient here is a java app a friend of mine wrote - part of it sits on
my dialup/file server and waits for command, the other part is a command-line
app that sits on my ECS machine. the app will send a command line to be executed on
a remote machine. i also use this application to have Winamp running
on a separate machine, yet fully under the control of ECS.
if you'd like a copy of the app, you can get it at:
http://www.mindspring.com/~mither/execute/
it'll run 'out of the box' if you've got a java runtime installed. he's also provided
the source if you're inclined to mess around with it...
