The quick answer is: it can't be done with the old monolithic ECS. David 
had suggested to use "service-it" (and there is a similar tool in the NT 
resource kit that is also available as freeware), but it won't work for 
ECS. The problem is that services cannot have a user interface (actually, 
that is not quite true, but is for the purposes of ECS).

The only way ECS could be run as a service is if it was designed from the 
ground up to do that. ECS would have to have two parts: one part that 
implements the engine (this one would simply run without ever bringing up a 
window), and a separate program that implements the user interface.

It seems that with the new Web/Java interface, Mark is doing something like 
that, and with that implementation, Ken can run the actual ECS as a service.
