Toshiba Strata

Hi,
I read the following with interest, as I need to upgrade from my trusty
Merlin Plus system. Man! I have enjoyed that system. 4 lines in (will
accomodate 6) and 20 phones. I paid only $800. Now, I have to have CID,
Call Attendant, and would like VM, although, I could Call Forward to my VM at
a Corporation, I chair which I have to check anyway.

How can I get a good deal on such a Toshiba Strata at a good price? I am
wired wired Cat 5. How many pair is required by the Strata?

What alternatives are recomended? I have considered a used Partner Plus with
the 4.0 VM at prox $2,000 for a complete system. Since I have so many phones
in my home/office, a new system will cost a ton.
Thanks very much for the help.

those fax/voice line share devices might help get this done.
they pick up the line and listen for a fax or modem tone.
during the listen they play a ring simulator back on the line should a
 person be there.
once the line is determined to be a modem/fax a fake ring is passed out one
port, if it is a voice call the fake ring goes out the other port.
now i don't know if it could be done, but if the line is picked up then
maybe there is a way to play a message and act on dtmf input?

another thought. what is your phone system? i have a toshiba strata. i have
been using cid-a to get caller id and phone-c to request an extension or
service and then transfering the call to the appropriate extension. here the
 system generates the rings.
