Tanks for the response. Rats! :-(
Is everyone else experiencing this, or are there some 14.4 Zoom modems that
are better than others? If the latter, maybe I'll find another $6 modem on
Ebay and try again.

I never found a solution for this problem, other than to
increase the sound-card vol to the max when playing back
phone-messages (ECS ALREADY does this automatically).
Note that you can force ECS to play messages thru the
MODEM speaker if you define a TEXT Item whose name is
"ECS_MSG_PHN_C_PB", and whose Text is "1". You may find
this to be a bit louder.
