I had the same problem.  I created a group called #Blank that contains no
items.  The reason for the "#" is so that it is listed first alphabetically,
and chosen when ECS starts.  I leave that group visible whenever I'm not
using ECS.  It helps drastically.

   ? When I run ECS and have a large amount of items in the groups. Very
often I have a low memory error close some windows? I have plenty of
memory and very little running in the backround. Is there any work
