HTML "button" widths

Can anyone tell me why an HTML line like this:
	[INPUT TYPE="BUTTON" VALUE="123456789"]
produces a button with a lot of "padding" on the left/right
(i.e. like a "margin") ?
The longer the string, the more the padding.
btw, this relates to a slick new method of supporting
the TV-Guide screen via a web page.
