You might want to have Steve take a look at this Shure automatic mic mixer:

Peter Monahan, who owns/operates iAutomate, has wired houses with this mixer
and HAL 2000 and has had good results. The "automatic" part of the mixer
means that it only lets one microphone be active at a time.
