I looked at remote control fans at Home Depot once and the guy there did not
recommend them. Seems they have a lot of warranty returns after about 6
months to a year. The infrared receiver apparently does not hold up well to
vibration.
I'm using the leviton inductive dimmer (wall) switches which cost about $50.
They work pretty well and allow you to control the speed with dim and bright
commands. My fans hum loudly at certain percentages, and not at others.
The percentages vary from fan to fan, so I just have ECS programmed not to
stop at those levels.

I just use the appliance switches on my ceiling fans. Got some from
Worthington when they were on sale a few years ago.
Seldom do we change the speeds except unless I have done several hours of
yard duty and come in sweating like a little pig! No smark remarks Kindred!
