Mark,
I downloaded and tried to install ECS Linux last night. I ran into a couple
of problems. I'm (still) running RH 6.1.
1. Setup failed to copy a valid executable target for ecs. I downloaded,
uncompressed and saved ecslnx to a DOS partition. I then booted Linux,
logged in as root and ran setup. Setup completed without any errors. When I
tried to execute ecs (from /home/ecs), Linux complained that ecs was an
invalid command. In looking at the file, I noted that it was only 1.2K in
size. The original file (the one on the DOS partition) is 852K. I checked to
see if setup created a symbolic link. It didn't. Without luck, I tried
several times to copy ecs from the DOS partition to /home/ecs using cp. It
copied but the target size was still 1.2K and an invalid executable. To fix
this problem I had to copy ecs (the executable) on to a floppy from windows
and then after booting Linux to /home/ecs. I then changed the file
properties to make the file executable.
2. After I successfully copied ecs to /home/ecs, I ran it with the copy of
ecs.cfg that comes with ECS. It started up without a hitch. I then copied my
ecs.cfg that is running with ECS 4.4006 for Windows (I don't know which
build). When I tried running it, ecs threw a segmentation fault. I don't
know why. My ecs.cfg file consists of the concatenation of the ecs.cfg that
ships with ECS and my own .cfg file that contains the items and events
specific to what I'm doing. The only errors (warnings) I get under Windows
include redundancy warnings with a notice that ECS is ignoring the second
instance of the items. That usually works fine because I add the ecs.cfg
file contents on to the end of my .cfg file.
