I have a Tivo.  Thus far it has been very very nive for the way that I
watch TV.  I have shows that I like to watch and MUST SEE whenever they
come on.  So it WILL ALWAYS record Star Trek, even if it has to overrite
other programs that I have said it MUST record.  Then if I have extra
space that isn't being used it will record other programs that I have
given a positive feeback to.  I am not at home alot but when I am home I
watch my shows, skip through the comercials and never give the TV a
second thought.
