Subject: From: Date: | RE: [ECS] Phone-Interface A.J. Griglak Fri, 29 Sep 2000 00:19:35 -0400 |
Actually, lately my setup has been working ~OK... I've been switching
between the recommended Zoom modem and an old 33.6 Rockwell based modem.
The Zoom tends to not notice when a caller has hung up, consequently
recording until the timeout, which in turn records a half second message -
no matter how long the caller has talked.
The older Rockwell has been running pretty well. Its biggest flaw is
recording a message even though a caller has hung up. It doesn't sound like
a big deal, but let me set up the typical scenario...
I run a one man home based business, so the phone and messages are vital to
my business. I have ECS setup to call my cell phone whenever a message is
left, and read off the caller id info. I can then start a remote phone
session if I wish to listen to the message. However, recently many people
have been calling my office number, seeing I'm not there, hanging up and
then calling the cell phone. Sure enough, 10 seconds into the call, I get
call waiting from ECS calling to play me a blank message. It gets extremely
frustrating especially when I've gone over the alotted minutes on my cell
phone for a given month... I'm paying extra to hear blank messages.
I guess though, all in all, I rather get blank messages than have people
think they've left a message, and then I never get one - that tends to upset
people thinking that I'm blowing them off.
I've thought about switching to voice mail software and having ECS monitor
the directory for new wave files, but then I would loose the remote session
capability.
If I can tweak the silence settings so that the Rockwell will not record
blank messages, I'd be a happy camper.

Subject: [ECS] Phone-Interface
I have been frustrated with my Zoom modem, both with the quality of the OGM
and the sound level of the messages. I know Mark has tried to refine this,
but aside from Mark, it appears that most of us struggle with this.
Previously I started a dialog to try and find out what the group wanted out
of the Phone-Interface, and what they were unhappy with. So here I am again,
looking for opinions. I'd also like someone who has some background in this
area to step up and direct any dialog in a positive direction. I am woefully
inadequate in this area.
Any takers?
Don
