RE: [ECS] Voice modem hassles

The Object World software is incredible. I was just about to purchase a
licensed version of that when I came across ECS.

I have several thoughts on this:

1. Perhaps ECS' voice mail capability could simply be to monitor a
directory for new wave files. The Object World software simply stores new
messages in their own directory as regular wave files. I don't think that
Mark should spend time integrating with a _particular_ piece of software,
but rather just monitor for wave files. Trying to integrate with a
particular piece of software could be a waste of time if that company should
go out of business or discontinue the product - or if something better comes
along (see VNC vs RADMIN).

This monitoring of the wave files should still give all the same features
from within ECS that we have right now - able to call in, start a remote
session and listen to messages, etc. I don't want to use this "other"
program to listen to messages, give remote cell notification, etc. I really
like the power of ECS' customization....

2. OR, we could concentrate on a more mainstream modem for which ECS works
with. I sell computers, and when including a modem, I'd either use the
cheapest, generic thing I can get, or if the customer is going to use the
modem extensively, I put in a 3Com. If I were to vote on a modem to be the
suggested hardware for ECS, it would be one of 3Com's. I will definitely
offer one up for testing purposes...

3. I'm no programmer, but here's another thought: Correct me if I'm wrong,
but right now ECS communicates directly to modem. It doesn't matter what
driver is installed in Window's Control Panel. Is there any way to have ECS
use Windows Telephony to communicate with the modem? Wouldn't this allow a
much broader range of modems supported?

these guys have a nice product and a list of modems that they have had
success with.

www.objectworld.com

the issue is that their software only runs under win95/98. do not know why.

an alternate approach might be to try and integrate with an existing product
like winfax/talkworks.

Perhaps we should come up with a candidate(s) for
a newer/POPULAR/STABLE voice-modem. I will then
obtain/review it's comm spec, and ask that some
one send me a loaner for integration/test.
