I think the biggest advantage to using TAPI to communicate with the modem is
that you don't need to know the manufacturer-specific AT commands. It's kind
of like being able to print from any Windows application without needing a
printer driver for each app. Of course, some modems support more features
through TAPI than others, but it appears to be a fairly consistent interface
to the hardware. Another TAPI advantage is that multiple applications can
use the modem at the same time.
The drawback to the methodology is that you wouldn't be able to use the same
code with a Linux version of the product, as TAPI is strictly an MS thing.
