I frequently assemble text items from other text items and item states. 
For example:  The temperature is 82 degrees.  I have a problem inserting
the space between assembled components.  I have tried using a text item
that has only a space but ECS ignores it.  Does anyone else have this
problem?  Any solutions?  Besides being a perfectionist this
occasionally causes ECS to mispronounce words.
