Just my opinion.
1) I've been using TAPI since long (1997) and it works fine. I tried
several analog modem but all, some better, some worse, work using
standard Windows API as for voice recording/playback and DTMF detection,
making calls, and even receiving/sending FAXes and making data calls.
All you need is in Windows APIs.
We talked about it with Mark long ago.
I understand non-Windows portability maybe an issue, even if I don't
know how much compelling.
Best thing would be Java TAPI (which I didn't know and I send my thanks
to the one reported it here!), of course it has to be tested and
understood.
2) I don't quite agree with the Dialogic choice. I think (and tried) an
analog modem (56K) is quite good for what is needed in Home Automation
system: answering machine, DTMF and remote actions, FAXes, data commands
(and WEB access), sending SMS through a provider. I can even get Caller
IDs using TAPI!
If anybody wanted too, I guess a good approach would be creating a
custom board to be connected to an audio-board (SB or else) and plugged
onto the phone line. It should interface with the Line and go on/off
hook, sense ringing and DTMF... then it all would be a matter of driving
the audio card.
Of course this "device" has to be created (not too difficult after
all... a few relays, a ringer sensing).
3) As for the ISA/PCI interface matter, it shouldn't be too bad as USBs
are easily mapped on standard COM ports. So if you get a good hardware
and set it as the standard, I don't think the way it is connected to the
PC can be a problem.
Of course, ISA is old but almost any PC still features it.
