I second that recommendation. I recently replaced my Linux box that I had
used for that purpose (works very well!) with a Linksys router (works just
as well!).

These services do NOT give you a static IP address at all. What they do is
a DNS name that "follows" your dynamic IP address. You can for instance use
that if you run a Web server - sign up with one of these DDNS services,
have them list www.mydomain.com in their DNS server, and your own server
simply regularly submits the current IP address to the DDNS service. That
way, even if your ISP changes your IP address, all users would still be
able to find you.
Bottom line, for the question here, these services don't help you.
