Joe,
I ran into this with a CD changer. The 'fix' I came up with is to send
either bogus commands to your one and only IR port or if you are using a
SECU-16IR, send any command to an open port.
A work in progress website shows some of the tricks I have learned. The
site isn't finished yet (will it ever be?) but at least has the answer to
this problem. The answer can be found at

I am assuming you are using an Ocelot but this theory should work regardless
of the IR interface.
