I would like to see it handle data both ways.  From a recieving point of
view I agree with Mark that handling it byte by byte would provide more
flexibility, but for sending it would be easier to send a whole line at
a time.  Mark, would this change the scope of the project?

Handling it one byte at a time would offer greater
flexibility and avoid the need for a hard-coded "protocol"
(which would best be handled by Events).
