Install instructions attached.

********************
2.2.38:

3/15/03:
61) Added support for ALL time-zones.

62) ECS now sets the CLOCK.TIME-ZONE default if it can be determined
from the OS (generally defined by the "TZ" environment variable).

3/17/03:
63) Enhanced login/logout logic, such that if a user logs in with the
same name/password as was used for another current session, then this
older session is logged out (all secondary windows are closed and
home.htm is displayed in the primary window).

3/18/03:
64) Added "PERSISTENT" Property to HTTP/HTTP-IMAGE Classes.

3/19/03:
65) Enhanced NOAA-WEATHER/POINT-SERVER/HTTP/HTTP-IMAGE Classes to download
web-pages via WPDL.EXE (so as to avoid halting ECS while establishing
     connections).
In all cases, WPDL.EXE writes to files/logs specifically dedicated to
the calling Object (to avoid file conflicts during concurrent downloads).
HTTP/HTTP-IMAGE Classes use WPDL.EXE only for non-persistent connections.

66) WPDL.EXE arguments have been redefined/enhanced (per #65).
If you are using this pgm, please refer to WPDL manual section.

3/20/03:
67) Enhanced JAVA image-display logic (for speed and greater
robustness).

Installation/Setup
  1. Download ECS_BETA.EXE into any desired folder.
Note:: To create a new folder:
    1. From your Win DeskTop, click MY COMPUTER.
    2. Click the icon for your C: drive.
    3. If your new folder is to exist within another folder, then select that folder.
    4. Click FILE, NEW, and FOLDER.
    5. Enter the name of new folder.
    6. Close the Window

  2. From your Win DeskTop, click START and RUN, and enter "{dir}\ECS_BETA", where "{dir}" is the name of your folder (or click BROWSE, find the file, and click OK).

  3. To give ECS "text-to-speech" (TTS) capability (highly recommended, but not mandatory):
    1. Download the Microsoft Text-to-Speech Engines to \PROGRAM FILES\ECS.
    2. Click here, click "Run this program", and click "OK" to install the engines.
    3. Download the Microsoft Speech Install Program to \PROGRAM FILES\ECS.
    4. Click here, click "Run this program", and click "OK" to complete the TTS installation.

  4. For WIN95 users only: Install the "Windows Socket 2 Update".

  5. To start ECS, double-click the "ECS" icon on your Win desktop. After a few seconds, ECS will display it's login page in your web browser.

Note: We highly recommend the use of I.E. (Internet Explorer) over NetScape, due to a bug in the latter, plus the fact the NetScape manages Windows resources poorly (which can cause problems when large ECS Pages are displayed). No such problems exist with I.E. So for these reasons, ECS will run NetScape only if I.E. cannot be found on your PC. However, I.E. also suffers one minor anomaly in that it may try to connect to the Internet when you attempt to login to ECS (even though no Internet access is required). If this occurs, "make I.E. happy" by letting it connect, then login to ECS, and disconnect. This will not happen again unless you restart I.E. when disconnected.

  6. Click LOGIN to display the main page.

    Help tips:

    • To learn more about a specific prompt/field, move the mouse over it.
ECS will then display more information in the browser "status line" at the bottom of the screen.
    • For context-sensitive help, click "HELP". ECS will then display the applicable section of this manual.

  7. So that ECS may accurately predict your sunrise/sunset times, edit your Clock Object as follows:
    1. Click "EDIT". This will display a "map" of your Objects.
    2. Scroll down a bit and click "CLOCK". This will display the edit page for the "Clock" Object.
    3. At the "Time-Zone:" prompt, select your time zone.
    4. At the "Longitude:" / "Latitude:" prompts, select your location's latitude/longitude
(click here for USA latitudes/longitudes, or here for international).
    5. Click "SUBMIT". "Clock.Sunrise" and "Clock.Sunset" will now denote the sunrise/sunset times appropriate to your area.

  8. If you want to access ECS remotely (via the internet), first review the Internet Security Issues.
Then edit one or more of following Password Objects, change their Client-IP addresses as required, and change their Passwords to something hard to guess:
    Guest-Password
    User-Password
    Maint-Password
    Owner-Password
    Owner-Password/Expert

  9. To stop ECS, click "STOP" in the main page.

  10. To run ECS when Windows boots:
    1. From your Win DeskTop, select START, SETTINGS, TASKBAR, START MENU PROGRAMS, and ADD.
    2. At the "Command:" prompt, enter "\PROGRAM FILES\ECS\ECS MAIN.CFG".
    3. Click the STARTUP folder and click "NEXT".
    4. At the "Select a name for the shortcut:" prompt, modify the shortcut name (if desired), and click "FINISH".

If you run across a problem or bug, please report it via the Problem Report Form.
When complete, click DONE at the bottom and it will be emailed to us.
Note that we take problem reports very seriously (i.e. we generally pursue them immediately and correct any bugs within the day).
