A "NoRouteToHostException" usually indicates that there is something
wrong with the IP address or the default gateway setting on your local
computer.

It's also possible that the connection is intercepted on the way by a
firewall or something similar.

You were saying that you have a firewall that blocks port 89. When you
use port 3000 instead, do you have a log file that tells you whether the
Java connection even reaches the firewall machine (or is that a firewall
right on the server machine or the client machine?)

If you have Windows NT/2000 (and probably also some versions of XP - but
probably not XP Home), see if you can install Network Monitor on the
machine that gives you the NoRouteToHostException. Running that tool can
tell you what happens to each package that goes across the line and can
be invaluable.
