Are you SURE it used to open your home page when you opened a new tab?
 According to this
(http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=1332717), a new tab
always comes up blank and a new window always comes up with your home
page. Unless they've changed it in the most recent version. Or maybe
you had a really old version of Firefox on your previous machine that
still worked the way it should.
