My guess is a hardware issue between the DVD drive and the actual DVD. I
have the same thing happen with an actual, brand-new, stand-alone DVD
player.

As far as I know, Linspire (used to be Lindows) has one. But since I
suspect that it isn't a software problem in the first place, it may not
help you much...
