hi joe,
my xp installed-pgm list shows "J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 update 
*6*" (so you are behind by one update).
i have no idea why they refer to the same release with two version 
numbers ("1.5" and "5.0").

you can install these java updates without installing any ecs updates.

btw, after uninstalling all my JREs (i had some old ones lying 
around) and installing the latest java,
i spent most all of yesterday trying get java to work again with 
FireFox (there were no applets displayed).
to make a *very* long story short, here was the solution:
         copy
                 C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\NP*.dll
         to
                 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins
