hi all,
after spending a full day trying out various webcam programs (most of 
which were really horrible),
i think i finally found one that could do everything that i needed 
(incl applet support and motion detection/response):

the UI is very strange :-), but it *does* seem to do the job well.
i currently have one installed copy working with my internet cam and 
another with my webcam.

perhaps some of you could try it out and we could share ideas.
or if you know of another pgm that works well, please share.
