The text-mode yast is what I was suggesting...I just couldn't remember if it
was just "yast" or "yast2". One other thing I was thinking is whenever you
make a change to your config w/ sax2 I believe it makes a backup of your
config file. Restoring an older config file from the command line would be
another possibility.

The text-mode yast is what I was suggesting...I just couldn't remember if it was just "yast" or "yast2".  One other thing I was thinking is whenever you make a change to your config w/ sax2 I believe it makes a backup of your config file.  Restoring an older config file from the command line would be another possibility.

If he doesn't even get to the point where he can run yast2, he can start
a bit earlier in the process:

- reboot (if you can log on remotely from the network, you can use that
for a proper shutdown -r now, or else just hit the reset button).
- boot into runlevel 3. If you use grub as your boot loader (standard),
edit the boot command line by appending the number "3". You can do that
while grub is booting. I reboot my SuSE box so rarely that I don't even
remember exactly how it works, though.
- log on as root.
- run "sax2". That's the Yast component that sets the screen resolution,
and it will let you go back to fix the screen resolution - but you must
run it from text mode.
- reboot (you can probably just switch to runlevel 5).

BTW, you can always just run the text-mode YaST by typing "yast" instead
of "yast2".
